[Pick Of The Week] Olivia Rodrigo – “vampire”

Rejoice! Olivia Rodrigo is back and better than ever! The alt-pop queen is reigning in a new era with her forthcoming sophomore album, GUTS, on September 8 and first offering, “vampire” is a glorious place to start!

Produced and co-written with her SOUR partner in crime, Daniel Nigro, “vampire” marks Rodrigo’s departure from her past-signature dreamy minimalist vibe as she embarks on this new chapter with a bold intensity listeners have been craving!

Telling the tale of a toxic relationship that quite literally drains your life, “vampire” goes there lyrically, showing anyone who has ever been treated like prey that they’re not alone.

The track’s accompanying video – directed by Petra Collins – is a bloody reminder that, damn, it really is brutal out there!

“I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me — almost like an out-of-body experience,” Rodrigo recalls. “It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to.”
