[ALBUM REVIEW] LANY – ‘Malibu Nights’

After the release of their self-titled debut in 2017, LANY fans certainly were not expecting a follow up release so soon, but when inspiration strikes, you gotta roll with it.

After a very public breakup, singer Paul Klein went into hiding to create what we now know as Malibu Nights – a collection of songs written during “the worst 45 days” of the singer’s life.

“I’m so proud of how I walked through that season. I made the absolute most of it. I’m not just a better writer and a better artist, I’m a better person. I feel so much more in touch with who I am and how I think and feel. It’s been the most productive 45 days of my life.”

Where LANY’s previous material used to be drenched in lust and the bittersweet feeling of falling for someone, Malibu Nights takes the band’s entire sound and aesthetic & brings it up a notch to bring listeners some of the best breakup anthems you will hear all year. But don’t fret! That classic LANY feel is still alive and well. Tracks like “Thru These Tears,” “Thick and Thin,” “I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore,” “If You See Her,” and “Valentine’s Day” possess that comforting LANY vibe with a certain freshness that listeners will appreciate.

Exploring a more R&B-centric sound, tracks like “Taking Me Back,” “Let Me Know,” and title track “Malibu Nights” delights the senses in every way while tea-spiller “Run” just might make some headlines as it embodies that “oh shit” factor of Justin Timberlake’s 2002 hit, “Cry Me A River.”

Crafted so poignantly, the tracks on Malibu Nights will have you reminiscing on old flames and bitter ends as the sun sets and all that surrounds you is solitude and a clear mind. We just hope our dear Paul is doing well.

Malibu Nights is available now here.
