[REVIEW] The Millennial Club – ‘She’s So Insane’

So-Cal’s The Millennial Club first dazzled us last year with their synth-soaked, eighties-inspired tracks “Give It Up” and “Santa Barbara.” It’s been a long wait, but the band has finally unleashed their debut EP, She’s So Insane, this week and we’re pretty smitten.

Delivered in true millennial fashion with abbreviations and 80’s/90’s nostalgia, She’s So Insane instantly takes you back to the first time you listened to The 1975 and LANY. With a sense of freshness that can only come packed into a debut EP, She’s So Insane is scintillating as it is heartbreaking as the notions of dealing with love, infatuation, and loss run rampant throughout the 25 minute experience.

Opening with title track, “She’s So Insane,” images of young love run free with an infectious synthpop vibe one could get lost in for days while “Santa Barbara” effortlessly blends R&B and indie-pop sensibilities while diving into everything that drives us to overthink every situation. The lyric of, “I could never see it in my mind / That my God is always with me and he’s got me in line / But thinking that I gotta know the future is the part that keeps me up late at night,” symbolizing a universal fear most, if not all, feel at some point in their lives, especially in their twenties.

“MI” deals with the heart-wrenching pain of long distance relationships as one moves away for school with a killer sax solo that is guaranteed to induce chills and make both St. Lucia and Matty Healy jealous! Think: Saved By The Bell’s Zack and Kelly get separated after high school, having to deal with a painful goodbye yet of course, reuniting and getting married later on. However, perhaps in this case, things aren’t so happily ever after as “IDWBILWY” (I don’t wanna be in love with you) deals with the trials of getting over someone and moving on as one’s love is not reciprocated anymore.

Things heat up once again with the track that started it all. “Give It Up” is equal parts buzzworthy as it is exciting to experience time and again as the band describes the utter drama of trying to get someone to notice you. That notion continues in “love is so hard!” making it literally impossible to look away and not find something to relate to.

A collection of anthems for those who have had their hearts broken or been infatuated with anyone way out of their league, She’s So Insane encapsulates that feeling of youth, first loves, and a desire for adventure and wonder.

“The ‘She’s So Insane’ EP is an extremely honest collection of songs, and our journey as musicians has been captured in these tracks. It’s a really big deal for us because it’s the first complete set of work we’ve put out; because of that, it really feels like now, more than ever, people have a holistic view of us. I guess in a way, that means they really can (truly) see if they like our music, or if they simply like just one of our songs.”
