Emerging Los Angeles indie-pop/rock artist, Mariah Counts, isn’t just releasing a new song, “What’s What I Did,” today; she’s starting a movement.
After taking a step back from the chaos of the world, Mariah reconnected with herself, choosing passion over pressure while penning a gritty empowerment anthem for anyone who has ever been made to feel less than.
“This song is my unfiltered response to the current climate of oppression. Especially, as a woman, a queer person, and someone who refuses to dim their light for anyone’s comfort. I’m sick of watching marginalized communities get dismissed, thrive on their own terms, and then have the men in power come knocking again because they can’t stand that we made it without them. I don’t need approval to take up space, and I’m sure as hell not playing nice to make anyone comfortable. I’ve never needed permission to exist, and I’m not about to be silenced now. Fuck the patriarchy. I’m a problem for the system, and I won’t apologize or stay quiet about it.”
