[PLAYLIST] The OG Feminists – International Women’s Day 2019

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sick of seeing feminism being used as a marketing ploy.

We see it everywhere now, but not many of us may notice – especially if we agree with its sentiments. However, no matter how you may feel about feminism or being a feminist, you can’t deny the fact that it is being sold to us…and we are gobbling this shit right up in the name of equality.

Don’t get me wrong. We all have good intentions when it comes to the feminist movement. But think about how we, as consumers, are being tricked into buying products with the word “feminist” on it. From clothing to stationary to home décor, marketers and retailers know what’s hot right now, and feminism is starting to feel like a fashion trend rather than the meaningful movement it is supposed to be. In other words: it’s just not feeling genuine now that people are making money off of us.

While feminism may be marketed to us on a silver platter, it’s no secret that feminism was always a thing; it’s just that unfortunately, not everyone was listening.

The artists featured on our (very much overdue) playlist are what we consider to be the OG feminists – the ones who shouted from the rooftops when no one was listening and continue to do so in the name of what is morally right for all genders. We’ve also added in some new favorites that have made their mark in the music world or are about to.

These badass women didn’t need a t-shirt to prove that they were feminists (though we’re pretty sure they would have worn them with pride) nor did they need to be sold on the idea of feminism by placing a decorative pillow on their couch with the word “feminist” on it. They just were, and they still are. They didn’t buy into an idea to fit the status quo because feminism is not something to be sold on. Take from that what you may.

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate those who have come before us to pave the way and those who inspire us to keep moving forward.
