[Pick Of The Week] MONACO – “Voilà”

Indie-pop darlings, MONACO, have been at the top of our list of bands we are super excited about, and their new single, “Voilà,” is just as dreamy as you’d expect from the LA-based band. With tales of finding true love in a society that often overlooks such things, MONACO ushers in hope for the lonely while conjuring up lost feelings for those who may need a reminder of what – or whom – lies next to them at night. All in all, the band’s debut EP can’t come soon enough!

Following indie-pop gems “Such A Vibe,” “Blush,” and “Blondes,” “Voilà” is classic MONACO at their finest as singer Daniel Davis tells yet another romantic tale of how he met his wife while delving into the relief of finding the one. Diving into the ups and downs of a relationship while healing old personal wounds, Davis proves that it is possible to become the right one for your future someone instead of constantly searching for the one, as that often happens serendipitously.

“Voilà was the second song I had written after “Such a Vibe”. Some people might believe this song to be a shift in sound, when in reality it was what I had in mind all along. I came up with most of the song back in Fall of 2014. It started out as just a chorus, but I had already worked on the fundamental skeleton of the song. However, later on after meeting my wife and going through a lot of the things we went through, I revisited the song and more of my 80’s and 90’s influences took over,” shared Davis. “I wanted it to feel like a rollercoaster. Rollercoasters tend to start off slow, gradually build, then it takes you for a thrill ride. This song is a tug of war emotionally, as well. Just when you think you’re moving forward, it pulls you backwards all over again. It sounds uncertain, hopeful, optimistic, then gives you assurance in the very end.”

“Usually when you hear the word ‘Voilà’ coming from a chef or some fashion designer. It means ‘There you are!’ in French. However, for me it was a play on words. When I met my wife, it was more of a sense of ‘Finally, there you are.’ It’s playful yet has a deeper meaning. That’s exactly how my wife’s personality is; playful, yet has a lot of depth to her. That’s what I love most about her. I was in my car, and I heard an old version of this song idea come on shuffle, and I realized I knew exactly what I wanted the song to say. I went back, completed all the verses, but kept the chorus the original. It felt like those words back then were so prophetic, it told our story of learning to trust each other so perfectly.”
