[ALBUM REVIEW] Bad Suns – ‘Mystic Truth’

It was 2016 when alternative/pop band, Bad Suns, released their sophomore effort, Disappear Here. Turns out, after touring in support of that album, that’s exactly what the band planned to do. Now, three years later, record labels have changed (the band is now part of the Epitaph Records family) and third release, Mystic Truth, feels like a new lease on life with some throwbacks to where it all began.

We can always expect quality from Christo Bowman, Gavin Bennett, Miles Morris, and Ray Libby, and Mystic Truth has exceeded our expectations immensely with a soaring new sound we hope to hear more of in the future with lyrical elements immersed in personal growth. Prepare to have those light bulbs going off in your heads as you discover something new with every listen.

Lead single “Away We Go” begins our listening journey with an upbeat and inspiring take on wanting more from life as everything starts to feel stale and empty – a fitting way to begin a new chapter.

Once “One Magic Moment” comes rolling in, it becomes pretty evident this record was made for road trips and journeys into the imagination as reality and fantasy – mystic truth – coexist. It also becomes pretty obvious that the album highlight is without a doubt, “A Miracle, A Mile Away” as it partially transports the listener back to the band’s 2014 debut, Language & Perspective. Basked in both light and dark, “A Miracle, A Mile Away” is the light at the end of a long tunnel for those who may need a little hope.

Tracks like “The World and I,” “Love By Mistake,” “Darkness Arrives (And Departs),” and new fan favorite “Hold Your Fire” just screams of influences past and present (The Beatles, The Strokes) while “Howling At The Sun” and “Separate Seas” are only proof that this was the epic sound the band has been working up to over the years.

Closing out with “Starjumper,” 90’s vibes run rampant much to our delight, making this short journey set to be put on repeat all day as we bask in the glory that Bad Suns are back and better than we had ever imagined. Well done, boys!

Mystic Truth is available now here.
