5 Powerhouse Female Artists To Follow This Year

When I think about my closest circle of friends and family, I realize I’m so darn lucky to be surrounded by such powerful, interesting, smart and brave women. I’m also lucky to be part of a team that’s guided by the kind and courageous soul that is our TDL editor, Tina.

In March, we celebrate Women’s History Month, and during the past year it’s been pretty surreal to see a lot of them raising their voices, fighting the good fight, and encouraging the younger generation to fight for what they believe in, and more importantly, what we all deserve.

As a part of this topic, I decided to do some research as I love discovering new music, but I put my main focus on finding and sharing some of my current favorite female acts. They all are incredibly talented, and I’m positive and ready to see them grow and reach a whole new level of audience.

1. Billie Eilish

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, and being only 16-years old, Billie Eilish is taking the world by storm. She first captured the world’s attention back in 2015 with the release of her debut single, “Ocean Eyes,” which was meant to be sent only to her dance teacher for choreography but wound up being the catalyst that took her to sign with Interscope Records just a year later.

Eilish has a strong and ambitious music style, displaying the perspective of a young girl who’s not afraid of speaking out about how she feels and sees the world. Her EP, don’t smile at me, is only a year old, but has an already sold out tour.

2. Tillie

If you’re not familiar with her name already, prepare yourself to enter her glitter-doused, edgy-guitar, girl power world. Tillie is a self-proclaimed ‘anti pop-star’ that first captured the attention of Machine Gun Kelly and Kevin Lyman (creator of the Vans Warped Tour) at an acoustic performance in Los Angeles back in 2016.

Her music solidly represents the whole ‘girl power’ mantra and even though her debut EP was released back in 2015, songs like “Pink & Blue” and “Save Yourself” (both released last year) have gained her a more established fan base and also showcases her growth as a musician.

3. Wafia

Wafia is a 24-year-old singer that stands out from the rest with her brooding, electronic-pop melodies. Her latest EP, VII, is full of honest, empowering lyrics intended to take the listener through her very personal journey.

She first garnered attention back in 2014 when she uploaded her cover of Mario’s “Let Me Love You” but in 2015 she started focusing non-stop on her music and succeeding at it. Wafia reached more audiences opening for BØRNS during his tour around Europe and she recently finished a leg of headlining tour dates in North America.

4. Katelyn Tarver

You may recognize her from her multiple recurring TV appearances, but for Katelyn Tarver, singing has always been the dream. She’s a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter who I’ve been following since 2011 when her independently created EP, A Little More Free, was released.

Since then, she’s been able to tour with The Cab and Parachute back in 2012, and even got to work with BURNS for her single “Hate To Tell You” in 2016. Tarver’s non-stop ability to keep creating led her to release one of my favorite EPs from last year, Tired Eyes.

With a genuine and true music style, Katelyn Tarver, is one of the best representations of strong-will and girl power and hopefully she’ll soon conquer the pop music world.

5. The Aces

TDL’s current favorite girl gang, The Aces, are gearing up to release their debut LP, When My Heart Felt Volcanic, on April 6.

With their infectious indie-pop vibes, the Utah group is one of those acts you stumble upon and never look back once you focus your attention on them. Songs that are very easy to relate to are what makes them great for the ears of us listeners. “Fake Nice” is a personal favorite, but really, all of their songs are summer playlist ready.
