[INTERVIEW] Hero Fisher Discusses Her Female Influences & Obstacles In The Music Industry

London-based singer-songwriter Hero Fisher left quite the impact on our listening habits these past few months. Her music is not only extremely captivating but she is also one of those artists you just want to find out more about; for this reason we decided to discuss some important matters from influences to craving a better future in music as part of our Women’s History Month specials.

Being that we’re celebrating Women’s History Month, can you name anyone growing up who had a huge influence on who you are today?

Billie Holiday’s singing has a depth and feel that resonated with me from the moment I discovered her. I listened to her work obsessively as a teenager. If I’m at a loss as to how to tackle a vocal, I think ‘How do I think Billie would do this?’

Are there any specific obstacles that you as a woman in music have to face more often than not?

We’re all sick to death of feeling preyed upon and condescended. I don’t know any female artist who hasn’t been fundamentally and repeatedly disrespected in this industry. Sex and power dominate what should be a source of discovery, personal creation, and the channeling of individual visions to share with one another. Luckily it’s not all bad, and there are wonderful people hidden everywhere and in every field who are open to change and equality. You just have to find them and stick together.

Have you got any tips on how the industry could be transformed into a safer, more respected place for women?

I think gender equality is something that has to happen, and will happen. It’s a slow process because there are such deep rooted learnt behaviors in the industry. Doors are opening in all parts of the field, and I believe that with time women will reclaim the protection and respect they deserve. My advice to female musicians is to get good management, and stay side by side in strange situations!

Is there any woman you think deserves more attention for their contribution to the music industry and would you like to highlight them here?

Yes! I have so much admiration for Marta Salogni  [The xx, Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Blossoms] who produced my upcoming album, Glue Moon, alongside Saul Wodak. She is a force to be reckoned with!
