[ALBUM REVIEW] The Ivy – ‘A Door Still Open’

The rise of Oklahoma indie-pop duo, The Ivy, can best be described as a ‘slow burn.’ Honestly, that’s the best kind.

Bursting onto the scene in 2017, The Ivy – comprised of Wyatt Clem and Shawn Abhari – saw their share of viral success when their tracks “Gold” and “Have You Ever Been In Love” climbed the Spotify charts, garnering millions of streams while winning over fans and critics alike. They’ve shared the stage with influences The Band CAMINO and LANY and they’ve performed at Lollapalooza.

With 3 EPs under their belt, it’s finally time for a full-length debut! Worth the 7 year wait, A Door Still Open delves into themes of self-reflection and personal growth, making it their most solid body of work to date. Written/recorded for the most part out of a storage container in Punta Mita, Mexico, A Door Still Open is a testament to The Ivy’s versatility.

Vulnerability takes a front seat throughout every track, giving listeners a cathartic therapy session from the jump. From album opener, “Broad Shoulders” to the 90’s grunge vibes of “Be Like You” and album highlight, “Phase Out,” it’s hard to pick a line that isn’t relatable.

“Tower of Terror” takes an existential turn as one contemplates the never-ending journey of healing and finding oneself while tracks like “Gums Lost Flavor” and “Stop on a Dime” delve into relationship turmoil – one the toxic kind of love where you cannot get enough as it wrings the life out of you while the other has fizzled out to the point where there is no choice but to say goodbye.

Closing out the record with title track, “A Door Still Open” and “Entangled,” listeners are shown a different side to The Ivy as the band experiments with a fusion of their signature indie-pop with folk-inspired guitars coupled with earnest lyricism.

Something tells us there’s more viral success for The Ivy in their future and with a killer debut like this, the sky’s not even the limit! Needless to say, the doors are definitely opening.
