[ALBUM REVIEW] Camila Cabello – ‘Camila’

All it takes is one catchy pop song and just like that, you’re hooked. When it came to the force that is Camila Cabello, catchy doesn’t even begin to describe it.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t too familiar with her previous work with Fifth Harmony, but “Havana” drew me in during a recent trip to Florida that it became impossible to get it out of my head. The truth is, I wasn’t even trying.

It takes courage to walk away from something that once defined you as an artist and while the reasons Cabello left girl group Fifth Harmony are hers alone, there’s no denying that this girl belongs behind the mic.

After falling in love with the accompanying video for “Havana,” we start to really see Camila for who she is behind all the glamour and maybe I’m biased when I say this, but the industry needed an introverted pop star. The singer’s stunning debut, Camila, took on many forms over the past year. After all, breakout hit “Crying In The Club” was everywhere last summer and “I Have Questions” felt like a promising follow up. “OMG” featuring Quavo gave fans a taste of where we thought her sound was headed, but after a little tweaking to make her big debut as perfect as possible, it has finally lead us to this moment where the singer has undoubtedly proved that talent and integrity will always reign in the end when you stay true to yourself.

From the blissful tracks of newfound (and old) love on “Never Be The Same,” “Inside Out,” “All These Years,” and “Into It” to the soulful ballads where she’s allowing us into her rich, inner world in “Consequences” & “In The Dark,” Cabello captures the essence of what it means to be young yet so completely aware. How refreshing.

“Real Friends” hit home as it encompasses everything I’ve ever felt my entire life. “Every time I let somebody in, then I find out what they’re all about.” The more you dive into the lyrical landscape of the record, the more you tend to feel as if she’s either read your diary or she’s your best friend, which is probably the best feeling in the world.

A debut wouldn’t be complete without a girl boss anthem! “She Loves Control” not only will have you pressing repeat but we have no doubt it’ll be a playlist must-have this year!

Adding in elements of the singer’s Latin roots with a blend of pop and R&B, we couldn’t ask for a better debut solo effort from this budding songstress than Camila. Watch out, world.

Camila is available now here.
