[REVIEW] Wallows – ‘Spring’ EP

There’s something about Los Angeles indie trio, Wallows, that makes all the uncomfortable parts of life more bearable. After dazzling listeners throughout 2017 with a slew of singles, the band has unleashed their debut EP, Spring, out on Atlantic Records.

With their own blend of shoegazy indie-pop that seems to exist within a hazy mist, Wallows – comprised of Cole Preston, Braeden Lemasters, and Dylan Minnette of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why – are here to prove that any expectations you may have about them are futile and the only thing any band can do these days is to just do their own thing with hopes of connecting with others. That notion, however, is a no-brainer given the growing fanbase they continue to pull in.

Opening with “Ground,” listeners are transported back to the days of early 2000’s indie/alternative while “It’s Only Right” captures the essence of summer as beachy vibes run rampant throughout the entire track, making it an EP highlight and soon to be fan favorite. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Spring is “Let The Sun In,” with its Beatles sensibility mixed with existential terror. “Help me darling now I’m feeling older / And I know, the time, it doesn’t wait,” – a line we all have uttered from time to time.

Flairs of influences may pop up here and there, but Wallows continue to hone their own sound, and make no mistake that Spring is just the beginning. From the infectious bop that is “Pictures of Girls” to the Tame Impala-esque “These Days” to the hauntingly ethereal gem that is “1980s Horror Film,” Wallows are proving they are here to stay and are having a blast in the process. After all, that is all that really matters in the grand scheme of things.

Spring is available now here.
