[Review] Basement Revolver Delights With Self-Titled Debut EP

The first time I heard Ontario’s Basement Revolver, I felt like I was in the middle of a scene out of Empire Records and She’s All That…if that makes sense. Singer Chrisy Hurn’s vocals are a lovely reminder of The Cranberries yet there’s something there I just can’t put my finger on that goes beyond anything Dolores O’Riordan has ever done.

With the release of the band’s self-titled debut EP, out today on fear of missing out records, the band introduces themselves to the music world with quite a bang, putting all of the shoegazers and 90’s nostalgia bands to shame.

Opening up with personal favorite, “Words,” we’re slapped in the face with a much-needed introspective into a world where words take up everything yet they mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

“Johnny” – our first taste of BR – is a track I told dear to my heart, especially when you’re going through hell and Hurn sings, “It’s a really bad time right now,” into existence and you’re just so happy that your misery now has some company.

“Lake, Steel, Oil” starts out as a chilled out gaze-at-the-stars-on-a-summer-night kind of track but slowly builds up into this massive gem that puts an ache in my heart in the best way possible, of course, as Hurn sings, “These days are numbered so don’t waste them on slumber.”

Closing track, “Family,” continues on the momentum of its predecessor as we’re enveloped in 90’s nostalgia for over five minutes and I’ve never felt more at peace. Gosh I love these guys.

“These songs were all written at a point in my life where I was experiencing a change in identity. Lyrically, there was a lot of looking back and processing the life and experiences I had been through. As a band we chose these songs in particular because they are some of our favourites from that time and they all share a similar mentality and tone. These are the songs that helped to shape and make us.” – Chrisy Hurn
