[News] Jack White Announces Plans to Play the First Phonographic Record in Space

Jack White and his label, Third Man Records, are known to be an innovative bunch. Over the years they have pushed the concept of what a vinyl record is and what it’s capable of. The label itself has released countless amounts of vinyl over the years, most with some sort of unique component to them. Whether it’s a hidden track under a label, floating holograms, multicolored vinyls, a record inside of another record….the list goes on and on and on.

To add to this long list, Third Man has successfully built a custom “space proof” turntable that will attempt to play the first phonographic record in space. This custom turntable called The Icarus Craft will be attached to a high altitude weather balloon and launched into the atmosphere. The record deemed worthy for this event is a 12″ gold plated master of Carl Sagan‘s “A Glorious Dawn” (which was previously pressed as a regular 7″ vinyl back in 2009) and marks Third Man’s 3 millionth record pressed.

Also, the literal launch party marks Third Man’s 7th anniversary! (Congrats guys!) Both the Nashville and Cass Corridor locations will be holding their own launch parties on July 30th. There will be live music and limited edition gold vinyl copies of “A Glorious Dawn” not to mention the showing of the pre-recorded launch itself (that will be streamed online) which will reveal the attempt by Third Man Records to make the history books once again. The Nashville headquarters will have the actual gold plated record on display for you to see and the Detroit location will have the Icarus Craft on display as well, so if you are in and around those areas definitely check it out if you can!
