LISTEN: Neon Trees – “Songs I Can’t Listen To”

Admit it because we’ve all done it: Made a playlist full of songs that we can’t even bear the thought of listening to because they’ll only rip us to shreds and remind us of the person who broke our heart. I still get a little twinge whenever I hear Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” and The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” as ironic and cheesy as that sounds. Trust me, it was ridiculous teenage infatuation but hey, it still hurt.

If there’s anyone in the music industry who connects to music on the same level as I do, it’s Neon Trees‘ frontman Tyler Glenn, and in the band’s synth-poppy new track, “Songs I Can’t Listen To,” Glenn covers the unspoken territory of having someone ruin a perfectly good song and the pain we as music enthusiasts feel while associating certain songs with certain individuals. The things we do for love…and art.
