[Interview] Getting Nostalgic with Scarlet Baxter

London’s Scarlet Baxter‘s favorite word just may be nostalgic – which is exactly what her 90’s pop and R&B infused sound invokes. Displaying a much-needed sassy confidence, it’s safe to say that girl power isn’t going anywhere! Get to know Scarlet Baxter below in our exclusive interview with the UK up-and-comer.

Your sound transports me back to my childhood when 90’s dance/pop & R&B were blended on Top 40  – which is something I think the industry was missing until now. Who are your influences and would you say you find pieces of them in your own material?

I am so happy that you feel that way about my music! That really does put a massive smile on my face as that is exactly what I wanted people to feel: nostalgic. I have so many influences in my music and it all takes me back to when I was really young from aged 12 upwards, from listening to my favourite artists at the time such as Lauryn Hill, SWV , En Vogue, Ginuwine and simply just hanging out on the field in 90’s combat trousers with my friends.

I was a big fan of Aaliyah, she was literally the princess of R&B so whenever I make a record she is always on my mind the same as even Christina Aguilera with how she approaches her music and uses her massive voice to colour the whole song, you can hear real passion in those artists and that is what has influenced me since I was a young girl.

What’s your initial mission with your music and what do you hope listeners take away from it?

My mission is just to make people enjoy my music and to not take my music too seriously and just simply enjoy it. So many people today will pick and pick at music and find every fault with it or be annoyed at the sound as it doesn’t sound like their favourite artist instead of just appreciating the sound and enjoying it. My favourite feeling (and word as it seems) is feeling nostalgic, I love it, there is nothing better than when you hear a song on the radio and you immediately think of the happy time when you were once enjoying that sound and all the memories come flooding back. What’s better than taking your mind back down memory lane!?

Any album/EP news in the works at the moment that fans should look out for?

I am finishing my album!! I cannot wait – it has been amazing recording and writing the songs for my album, Just need one big banger now to complete the album and then it will hopefully revolve around that big song 🙂 I am also going to make a second disk full of all the tracks but acoustically because that is a really important side of the music to me, being raw and performing with nowhere to hide.
