August ’16

Happy August, listeners! *insert ‘I can’t believe it’s friggin’ August already’ speech here*

It is the morning of August 1. In about 10 hours, I will be seeing my favorite band, Garbage, perform live in Central Park. Catching them live is always a treat and while this will be my third time seeing them, I know things are going to get emotional. If you read my recent editorial on the band, my struggles with emptiness & depression and how success is often subjective, you probably understand how just having one band out there who truly understands you is a form of comfort unlike any other. It’s a security blanket for those days when you want to hide and not think about the negative aspects of life. Without bands like this, blogs like this would not exist.

It’s hard not to get bombarded with information in this post-digital age and one of the main things we strive to be here at The Daily Listening is a break from the nonsense. Yes, we exist online, but we refuse to blend in to the world of gossip, drama and self-righteous rhetoric from those who seem to think their opinions are far more worthy than any other. We want you to come here to zone out and listen to some music you’ve probably never heard before all while maybe figuring out some things in your own life that were possibly plaguing you.

I’ve been reading a lot of other blogs recently. I tend to avoid this activity – mainly because I have a hard time with believing that I’m on the right path and because I honestly don’t like the feeling in my stomach that I get from reading something cruel. It’s like poison to the brain. I’ve been told before that I should view these other blogs as competition and for a while there I really (stupidly) started to believe that. Here’s the thing: How can you compete with something that really isn’t fighting for the same values you are? It’s quite impossible.

I recently started listening to Lostboycrow. His way with words blended into his signature pop/indie/R&B sound is such a treat and once I heard “Start Something,” I was quite inspired. Don’t you wanna know if it’s gonna go somewhere? / All I know is it never means nothing / Never take less and let’s start something.” I want this site to be more than a music blog but a movement and once I realized that “blogitics” (blog politics that we have no intention of contributing to) will always surround us, the more eager I am to ignore them and keep doing what we set out to do.

The more I have these realizations, the more inspired I get to make TDL better than I imagined. I want to know what you guys would like to see more of! We are always open to new suggestions on how we can improve so if you have an idea, please send it our way via email at Please use the title “TDL Suggestion” and I will get back to you ASAP. 🙂

I stand by my “success is subjective” mentality and if I’ve learned anything lately, it’s that the possibilities of what we can achieve are endless…but not without a little faith in ourselves and a whole lot of music to fuel us there.

Listen. Love. Share. Repeat.
